In Ms. Hopkinson’s US Geography class, our students’ imaginations are stretched, and their curiosity is piqued. They build their knowledge of the United States through classwork, their own research projects, and by learning from each other. Each day begins with movement, verse, singing, math, and language arts practice. These regular activities are followed by the lesson of the day, which introduces new content and builds upon the topic of the Main Lesson block.
Main Lesson
• Walk outside to start the day
• Morning Verse
• Bird Song, by The Wailin’ Jennys melody (work on this for 10 -15 minutes)
• Multiplication Practice
• Cursive Practice
• Kokopilau the Hump-backed Flute Player – Hopi – Southwest
Main Lesson Work
• Introduction & Instructions: US Regions
• Read Southwest and West, study states in these regions, and then fill out the states on your own.
Introduction to State Reports Assignments
Congratulations, you have chosen your state! Your next step is to research your state. You may use the following resources: friends and family who have lived in your state, National Geographic, Ducksters, and the official website of your state. If you have books at home on your state you may use those too. If you get stuck or if you need help finding something specific, please ask Ms. Hopkinson for help with internet research. See the State Report Guidelines that covers all the components that will be a part of your state report project. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do all of this in one day!
