The fourth grade studies Native Americans in a teepee, and then pioneers at New Village Farm!
During two days of classes held in a teepee outside, students experienced Native American culture through stories, crafts, walking barefoot and earthmapping. The following two days were spent at New Village Farm studying the pioneers. Learning by participating in the meaningful work of chopping wood, pressing apples, learning about animal husbandry, cordage making, and basket weaving.
The Main Lesson block culminated at New Village Farm where the class prepared a full meal, set-up overnight camp in the barn, and woke to farm chores.
“The children enjoyed this pioneering experience. We had our first hard frost, but we were prepared. We ate heartily and enjoyed all food preparations. The best part was learning how to be more independent, and knowing that through companionship and community we can pioneer!”
